Description
Olu Olu Plantain Flour 1kg is made from dried, milled green plantain — used to prepare plantain amala (amala elepo), a swallow with a milder, slightly sweet flavour and lighter colour than traditional yam-based amala. It's a popular alternative for those who enjoy a different take on the classic Yoruba swallow. Pack size: 1kg.
How to prepare
- Bring 2 cups of water to a rolling boil per 1 cup of plantain flour.
- Pour in the flour gradually whilst stirring continuously with a wooden turner to prevent lumps.
- Reduce heat, cover, and steam for 2 minutes. Stir again until smooth and elastic before serving.
- Serve hot, shaped into balls, alongside your preferred Nigerian soup.
Storage
- Store in a cool, dry place in an airtight container away from moisture.
- Best used within 6 months of opening.
Frequently asked
How does plantain amala differ from yam amala?
Plantain amala has a lighter colour and a milder, slightly sweet taste compared with the darker, earthier amala made from yam (elubo).
Is plantain flour suitable for low-carb or diabetic diets?
Plantain is a starchy carbohydrate food. Some people who are mindful of their carbohydrate intake choose smaller portions, but plantain flour is not a low-carb food. Always consult a healthcare professional for personalised dietary advice.
Is it gluten-free?
Yes — plantain is naturally gluten-free. Check the pack for cross-contamination information.
